Introduction to Tetra Pak (Collagraph) Printmaking (landscape / seascape inspired) | 30th May | 10am - 3:30pm
Explore the expressive potential of Tetra Pak printmaking in this dynamic one-day workshop focused on reuse, experimentation and landscape or seascape imagery. We encourage you to bring a photograph (we will also provide images to inspire your print if you wish).
Tetra Pak printmaking is an increasingly popular and contemporary print process that uses recycled packaging as a printing surface. Its layered construction offers a unique combination of resistance, texture and line - producing results unlike any other printmaking plate.
This workshop embraces the material’s unpredictability. You’ll work with textured features of landscapes and seascapes, exploring how imagery can respond to non-traditional boundaries, folds and creases. You’ll be encouraged to decide whether to work with or against these features - allowing the surface itself to shape the final print. Tetra Pak will be provided, but we encourage you to bring some with you too.
The day begins with guided drawing and visual research using reference materials. Trish and Nick will introduce approaches to composition that consider fragmentation, movement and texture.
Across the day you will learn:
a brief history of Intaglio printing with examples of tetra pak prints
observe and sketch botanical subjects for intaglio translation
prepare and transform recycled Tetra Pak into printable plates
work with alternative plate boundaries and irregular shapes
incise, texture and distress the surface through tearing and mark-making
explore how creases and seams affect printed line and tone
prepare and soak papers
print on a tabletop press and pull final editions
This workshop is playful, experimental and highly accessible - suitable for beginners and those keen to explore a more unconventional printmaking surface. Expect surprising results, bold textures and a fresh way of thinking about print.
Hot drinks and biscuits are provided - just bring curiosity (and a packed lunch). You’ll leave with a set of distinctive landscape/seascape inspired prints and the confidence to continue experimenting at home.
